Frost Fan Issue National News

TV1 viewers would have seen an article on the frost fan issue on tonights news broadcast
The text version of the story is here or you can watch the video segment here.
Stuart Smith couldn't help himself and touted the same tired scaremongering.
Likewise wine grower Chris Simmonds claimed that it was just 1% of the frost fans that were causing the problems. Err... Chris, have you checked out the results of the test of frost fan compliance lately? That would be more like 90% of them do not meet the requirements.
Sorry Chris, frost fan users in Marlborough have been running their machines at too high a level for years and as a result they have defecated in their own nest. THAT's why the Council is being forced to impose new regulations. It's the irresponsible users who thought they would set them to any level they wanted because the Council never checks them. It's not a few... It's almost all....
The chickens are coming home to roost.

Yes indeed, there was a whole lot of bovine scatology spoken by the grape grower ... and the claim the new rules will stiffle the industry is a crock of BS as well. The fan at the end of the item sounded pretty damn quiet, quite close up too, and is probsbly one of the new compliant ones ... so where's the problem Mr.Wine(ing) Grower ??

Mr Simmons has two quiet four blade machines near his house. So he wants his family to sleep, thats fine. Why does he want to put noisy two blade fans elsewhere that keep others awake? He has no two bladers anywhere near him, he can't have a clue what its like to try and sleep near one.

I presume you mean Mr Smith.
Yes, he has two quiet 4 bladed frost boss machines on his property close by (160 and 200m away from his house).
However in all fairness, he also has another 10 2 bladed fans with 1km of his house. The topology of the land around him means that he is insulated somewhat from other further fans, but rest assured, if those close to him are going, he'll be awake. However, the combined effect of these fans is insignificant compared to a few noisy 2 bladed fans fans that are closer to your house (Hyson, Stringer/Eaton and Kerr) Likewise, it will be insignificant compared to living in the middle of Fairhall or Gurnseys Road or parts of the Waihopai / Wairau Valley(s). Likewise those living downwind from the 53 fan behemoth in Hurunui would be pleased to live in the relative calm of Mr Smiths position.
The other thing to remember is that frost protection is a huge event to those involved in it. Sort of a social / combined fight against Mother Nature. It is small wonder that they don't care about anyone who is trying to sleep. They think everyone cares about their effort and it is a paramount concern in their eyes. What they don't fully appreciate is that their pollution affects others detrimentally and that affect is both a nuisance and unreasonable.
