Is the Defender a Hoax?

The alert reader will recall my post on the 10th of March where I put forward the proposal that if you repeat something often enough it becomes true (irrespective of the facts).
This was in response to the distinct lack of testing information coming out about the new Defender frost fan in spite of repeated advertising singing its praises at being ultra quiet.
Well go figure, an enterprising student has reinforced the theory that an inaccuracy repeated often enough can easily pass as the truth. Have a read of this article where a Dublin University Student posted a fake quote which was attributed to Maurice Jarre on Wikipedia (shortly after Jarre's death).
It turns out that the quote was widely reported as genuine to the point where the student felt it necessary to point out his deliberate deception for fear that history would take the quote as genuine. The media it seems was only too happy to report from a source with no attempt at verification and with no questions asked.
Does this sound familiar?
It should.
We've been hearing advertising about the low noise of the Defender fan since December 2008. But still no facts. No journo has asked for any confirmation of the figures, and no independent testing data has been supplied (to my knowledge, and I try to keep abreast of these things).
This could of course simply be the ranting of the fringe element, but I happened to take a drive down Paynters Road in Blenheim on the weekend, and the site where there are supposedly two of those big green Defender fans installed had one Silver fan and one bare pole.
Still testing by any chance?
I'd like to say that history would be the judge, but you know how easily history can be concocted.

WHY DONT YOU TALK TO THE UNIVERSITY OF CANTERBURY ?jOHN PEARCES NAME HAS BEEN PUT IN ADVERTISING BY FMR START WITH HIM?

I HAVE PERSONALLY HEARD ONE RUNNING AND IT IS VERY MUCH QUIETER THEN THE OTHERS AVAILABLE (TO THE HUMAN EAR) WHICH SHOULD BE WHAT MATTERS RIGHT?

IT SEEMS TO ME THAT THERE IS ALOT OF BAGGING GOING ON HERE FOR THE FACT THAT THE AUTHER OF THIS BLOG IS CONCERNED ABOUT NOISE AND FMR IS THE ONLY COMPANY THAT HAS PROVIDED US WITH AN OPTION THAT IS QUIETER THEN COUNCIL ALLOWS SO AS A GROWER AND OWNER OF WIND MACHINES I THINK YOU EITHER NEED TO GET YOUR FACTS FROM THE HORSES MOUTH (NOT UNRELIABLE JORNOS) OR NOT OFFER ANY MORE UN HELPFUL COMMENTS.

Woah!
WHEN YOU TYPE IN CAPITALS, IT'S LIKE YOUR SHOUTING.
Sorry, perhaps that was the effect you were trying to convey.
Your point is well made.
The JOURNO's should have talked to Dr Pearse. But instead, they have relied on a press release from FMR. I'm of the opinion that Dr Pearse is frankly having his name besmirched.
It's certainly not my place as a humble observer to prove the noise level of a frost fan. That's the job of the company developing it. They have chosen to avoid facts and rely on advertising to promote their wares.
I REALLY hope the fan is as quiet as they say. That would be a bold step forward and no-one would sing their praises more than me.
But the horse's mouth is FMR. They have to provide the information. It's they who will control release of figures from testing.
So you're right, there IS a lot of bagging going on. If they have done the testing, then they should release the facts. Until then the bagging will continue. In fact it will continue AFTER that if the measurements aren't the same as their advertising.
I'm certainly not doing the leg work for FMR. And you will find that the Frost Boss 4 bladed fans are quieter than the MDC levels (according to the testing data available, but strangely not according to FMR). Not that I'm keen to support Frost Boss other than they are currently the manufacturers of the quietest frost fan on the market according to testing. (they're still too loud if they're as close as 100m from a residence as allowed in the district plan.)

Have you bothered contacting FMR and asking for a copy of the test results? I understand that the test results are available to interested parties so maybe you could inquire before just bagging the company that is doing to most to provide a low noise option!
It will be interesting to see how much of your statements you retract should the result be what they have advertised. How would you expect FMR to provide you with their test results if you havent asked and are probably not a prospective purchaser for a wind machine?
It would certainly appear that you are more interested in simply bagging anyone and everyone that has any connection to the wine industry at all.

Sorry, I would rather deride the company for publishing misleading advertising than search for the truth. I am no better than the shabby journalists that accept the information at face value.
I feel ashamed.
So I have a deal for you.
If their advertising statements are proved to be correct by independent testing for their product and their competitors (i.e the data they published on Frost Boss and Orchard Rite), I will retract my criticism of their efforts, sing their praises and one week later, I will shut down this blog.
And you (Anonymous) can make this happen by finding the information from wherever you want and sending it to the following anonymous e-mail drop at jf.disposable@gmail.com
If I don't hear from you in two weeks, I'll presume that there is nothing to hear.
Believe it or not, I would like to be proven wrong. And you are right, In spite of FMR having made the equivalent of WMD for years, at least they're doing SOMETHING!

Hi Jack,

You might want to start making sure you have your affairs in order. I heard some testing of the Defender the night before last and although it wasn't at a time that I was trying to get to sleep, it seemed pretty quiet. The boffins are doing a great job at making things low noise. I tend to agree about the data on the competitors fans, so that may save your bacon, but that Defender is a new ball game.
Good luck. You might need it.
Malcolm

Quiet you say?
Don't suppose you have a sound meter reading?
I won't be getting nervous in a hurry :-)

I am not making 'deals' with you about anything. If you want the test results I would suggest you simply ask FMR for them or have someone else ask for them if you dont want to or cant. Alternately why not ask the Canterbury Uni people? I dont care if you operate your blog and publish whatever you like, I was simply suggesting that rather than bagging the company that is doing the most to provide the result you seemed to want, you might at least ascertain your facts first. Of course, it may be that you just want to complain about something?
